Mateus Fernandes Favours Manchester United Move Over Real Madrid Interest

Portuguese Midfielder Signals Old Trafford Preference Amid Bidding Complications

Manchester United have emerged as the preferred destination for Mateus Fernandes, with the West Ham United midfielder signalling his desire to join the club despite competing interest from Real Madrid, according to journalist Shaun Connolly.

United are targeting the 21-year-old Portuguese international as part of a broader midfield overhaul, with INEOS pushing to conclude a deal despite West Ham’s firm stance on valuation.

West Ham Hold Firm on Price

West Ham have refused to move from their initial asking price, creating the primary obstacle in negotiations. Real Madrid’s reported interest, reportedly facilitated by super agent Jorge Mendes, has added further complexity to the transfer.

Connolly, writing on X, sought to downplay the Spanish club’s involvement. “Mateus Fernandes is one of several players that Mourinho admires, but he is not a priority presently,” he noted, adding that “a Madrid approach wouldn’t be surprising” but that “there are questions about valuation.”

Player’s Preference Gives United an Edge

Fernandes has publicly expressed admiration for compatriot and United captain Bruno Fernandes, citing the midfielder as a key draw to Old Trafford. United are understood to view the player as a priority signing rather than one option among several.

“He has given preference to Manchester United, and the club are continuing with their efforts to agree a suitable fee,” Connolly wrote.

United’s interest is driven in part by Fernandes’ profile — effective both in and out of possession — which has drawn comparisons to Declan Rice, the Arsenal and former West Ham midfielder who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading central players.

Fee Remains the Decisive Factor

With the player’s preference apparently settled, the transfer now hinges entirely on whether INEOS can bridge the gap with West Ham on price. Real Madrid are not considered a serious threat to United’s position provided a fee agreement can be reached.

The prospect of developing alongside — and potentially succeeding — Bruno Fernandes in United’s midfield represents the central pitch to the younger Fernandes, one the club is banking on to keep negotiations on track.
