South Korea’s Lee Vows to Share Semiconductor Windfall, Accelerate AI Integration

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung declared on Monday that the gains from business success must be distributed across society, announcing plans to direct surplus tax revenues generated by the country’s booming semiconductor sector toward broader public benefit.

Lee made the remarks at a news conference in Seoul marking his first year in office — a tenure that began under extraordinary circumstances. He won the presidency following the ouster of his predecessor, whose failed attempt to impose martial law triggered a constitutional crisis.

Beyond Crisis Management

The president signalled that his administration intends to move past damage control. “We want to take the country beyond just overcoming the unprecedented challenge to its democracy,” Lee said, framing his second year as one of structural ambition rather than mere stabilisation.

He offered no immediate details on how the semiconductor tax surplus would be allocated, saying only that the government would devise a concrete plan for its effective use.

AI and Defence Self-Reliance

Lee also laid out two sweeping strategic pledges. He committed to making South Korea the first country to fully integrate artificial intelligence across all industries — a target that would position the nation at the frontier of industrial AI adoption.

On defence, Lee said South Korea aims to become the preferred partner for countries seeking self-reliance in their military capabilities — a pointed signal to a region recalibrating its security dependencies amid shifting US commitments and ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula.
