India condemns Trump’s ‘hellhole’ remark as diplomatic row escalates over immigration comments

India has issued a sharp rebuke to US President Donald Trump after he amplified social media content describing India as a “hellhole,” triggering a diplomatic incident that exposes tensions over America’s birthright citizenship debate.

The Ministry of External Affairs condemned the remarks as “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” asserting they misrepresent the reality of India-US relations built on mutual respect and shared interests.

Controversial podcast sparks outcry

The diplomatic row stems from Trump’s repost on Truth Social of a podcast by conservative radio host Michael Savage. In the broadcast, Savage claimed immigrants exploit US laws by arriving late in pregnancy to secure “instant citizenship” for their children, then bring families from “China or India or some other hellhole on the planet.”

The podcast transcript went further, characterizing Indian and Chinese immigrants as “gangsters with laptops” who have “robbed” the United States. These inflammatory remarks have drawn condemnation beyond India’s borders.

Swift damage control efforts

The US Embassy in New Delhi moved quickly to contain the fallout, issuing a statement emphasizing that Trump considers India “a great country” led by “a very good friend.” This diplomatic intervention highlights the stakes involved in maintaining the strategic partnership between the world’s largest democracies.

Opposition leaders in India criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initial silence on the issue. They described the comments as “deeply insulting” and demanded a more forceful government response to defend India’s reputation.

Regional tensions emerge

The controversy has drawn unexpected support for India from regional players. Iran’s consulate in Hyderabad backed both India and China, describing them as “cradles of civilization” while turning the rhetoric against the US, labeling America the actual “hellhole” due to its military interventions abroad.

This incident coincides with ongoing Supreme Court deliberations over birthright citizenship in the United States, a policy Trump has repeatedly targeted. The timing underscores how domestic US political debates increasingly intersect with international diplomatic relations.

The diplomatic spat threatens to complicate the traditionally robust India-US partnership, particularly as both nations navigate complex geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
