Pentagon Email Reveals Trump Administration Plans to Pressure NATO Allies Over Iran War Support

An internal Pentagon email has exposed the Trump administration’s consideration of punitive measures against NATO allies deemed insufficiently supportive of US operations in the Iran conflict, including a potential review of America’s diplomatic backing for Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

The email, prepared by Pentagon policy adviser Elbridge Colby, outlines options that include suspending Spain from the NATO alliance and reassessing US support for what the memo terms European “imperial possessions.”

Alliance Tensions Over Military Access

The policy document expresses frustration with allies’ reluctance to grant the United States access, basing and overflight rights (ABO) for Iran war operations. According to the email, such cooperation represents “just the absolute baseline for NATO.”

Spain features prominently in the Pentagon’s considerations after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government refused to allow US military facilities on Spanish soil for offensive operations against Iran. Madrid subsequently closed its airspace to all US aircraft involved in the conflict.

Trump has responded with characteristic directness, calling Spain “a terrible ally” and threatening to sever trade relations.

Falklands Sovereignty in Question

The memo’s most striking element involves potential reconsideration of longstanding US diplomatic positions. Among the options circulating at high Pentagon levels is reassessing American support for the Falkland Islands, which Argentina continues to claim despite British administration.

The timing carries particular significance given Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei’s alignment with Trump. The State Department currently recognises the islands as British-administered while acknowledging Argentina’s competing claim.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasised that the UK’s position remains “unchanged,” stating that “sovereignty rests with the UK, and the islands’ right to self-determination is paramount.”

Pentagon Justifies Pressure Campaign

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson defended the administration’s approach, stating that “despite everything that the United States has done for our NATO allies, they were not there for us.”

Wilson added that the War Department would ensure Trump has “credible options to ensure that our allies are no longer a paper tiger and do their part.”

The Iran conflict has strained alliance relationships since its outbreak on 28 February, with Trump particularly critical of NATO allies’ naval response to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
