Singaporean actress Nathania Ong will star as Elle Woods in Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) production of Legally Blonde – The Musical, which opens in Singapore on July 29. SRT said the show is adapted from the 2001 film Legally Blonde and will be staged at Esplanade Theatre.

Ong, 27, is based in London and has built her career in musical theatre, including roles in major West End productions. Her return to a Singapore stage marks her first local musical lead since 2023.

SRT’s production follows Elle Woods, a sorority student who enrols at Harvard Law School after a breakup and ultimately challenges perceptions about her intelligence and capability. The musical was first staged on Broadway in 2007 and later mounted in the West End.

SRT has not announced the full cast list in the details released so far, but said the production will bring the story to local audiences as part of its upcoming season.

Ong has performed in London’s theatre scene in recent years, including as Éponine in Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre from 2022 to 2023. In 2024, she played Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

In Singapore, Ong previously appeared as Cinderella in Pangdemonium’s staging of Into The Woods in 2023 at the Singtel Waterfront Theatre.

Ong calls Singapore role “especially meaningful”

In a press statement issued with the casting announcement, Ong said playing Elle Woods in Singapore “means a great deal” to her, describing the role as challenging and noting that performing at home allows family and friends to see her work more closely.

SRT said further production details, including additional casting and ticketing information, will be released ahead of the July opening.
