Parti Wawasan Negara \u2014 known simply as Wawasan \u2014 made its electoral debut in the Negeri Sembilan state election barely two months after its formal launch, contesting four seats under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner. The party is led by opposition figure Hamzah Zainudin and its secretary-general is Saifuddin Abdullah, a former foreign minister. Both men were sacked by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) earlier this year before regrouping around the “Reset” movement Hamzah launched in the aftermath of his expulsion, which eventually crystallised into Wawasan on June 13. The timing was not incidental: PAS had just unilaterally severed ties with Bersatu days prior, citing the latter’s alleged power-hunger and failure to prioritise Malay-Muslim unity, creating a structural vacancy in PN that Wawasan appears positioned to fill.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Wawasan itself is technically a rebranding of Parti Cinta Malaysia, a minor entity established in 2009 that has never won a seat. The leadership structure is more ethnically mixed than Bersatu’s, with deputy president Tan Lek Khang, two non-Malay vice-presidents and six non-Malay supreme council members. At least 19 parliamentarians reportedly back Hamzah, including Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Padang Rengas MP Azahari Hasan, some of whom remain formally enrolled in Bersatu. The party claims that when Hamzah launched the “Reset” movement, approximately 120 of Bersatu’s 160 division chiefs followed him, leaving Bersatu with roughly 40.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Saifuddin’s central pitch is that Wawasan should be understood not as a Malay-Bumiputera party but as one that reflects the full demographic composition of Malaysia. “We would like to fashion ourselves as a party that represents the ‘Malaysian face’; not a Malay-Bumiputera party but one that is open to all,” he told CNA in an interview on July 24. He was careful to reject the label of a “multiracial mask” \u2014 his term for parties that claim multiracialism while remaining structurally single-race dominant \u2014 arguing that Wawasan’s leadership composition distinguishes it from that pattern. In terms of structural analogy, he conceded that Wawasan would most closely resemble Anwar Ibrahim’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Saifuddin also articulated a theory of political stability that frames Malay unity as a precondition for minority security rather than a threat to it. He argued that when Malay-Muslims lack internal cohesion, they become psychologically vulnerable and prone to perceiving non-Malay communities as adversarial. He further claimed that the current unity government commands roughly 70 to 80 per cent support among minorities but less than 10 per cent among the Malay-Muslim majority, while the opposition holds approximately 90 per cent Malay-Muslim support but under 10 per cent minority backing. “That is not stable Malaysian politics,” he said, pointing to the collapse of the Mahathir-led Pakatan Harapan government in 2020 as a cautionary illustration of what Malay disengagement produces.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
A senior PAS leader, speaking anonymously to CNA, framed Wawasan’s structural function within PN with candour: the party is expected to perform the same moderating role that Bersatu once played, softening PAS’s hardline Islamist image for a broader electorate. Saifuddin confirmed as much from his own vantage point, stating that Hamzah was “instrumental” in brokering the electoral pact between UMNO and PAS in the Negeri Sembilan polls \u2014 a feat made more significant by the historical friction between Malaysia’s two largest Malay-Muslim parties. Bersatu, by contrast, is contesting Negeri Sembilan on its own, standing against its own former PN coalition partners, a sign of how dramatically its internal relationships have deteriorated.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Saifuddin described the Negeri Sembilan election as the first “experiment” for any durable BN-PN electoral cooperation. PN is contesting 11 seats, BN the remaining 25, with PH holding the incumbency advantage after winning 17 seats in the 2023 state election. A coalition or party needs 19 seats to govern the 36-seat state assembly. Saifuddin expressed cautious optimism, noting that BN leaders were openly urging votes for PN candidates and vice versa, and that successful vote transfer between the two blocs would validate the partnership model ahead of future general election negotiations.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The assessments from Malaysian political analysts are considerably more sceptical than Wawasan’s own framing. Azmi Hassan, a senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research, argued that the party’s most immediate benchmark is outperforming Bersatu in raw vote share \u2014 a necessary but not sufficient condition for establishing national relevance. He also questioned the credibility of the “fresh politics” narrative, pointing to the appointment of 84-year-old former minister Rais Yatim as party chairman. “Unlike MUDA, you can see that their candidates and leadership structure is made up of those from the younger generation, but I don’t see this in Wawasan. It seems like the same old same old,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Political scientist Syaza Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia was more pointed, arguing that Wawasan’s formation reads less as a national reset than as a vehicle for particular leaders to secure new political footing. “It claims to lead the ‘Reset’ movement but like most people have said, it feels more like a reset for Hamzah and his supporters than a reset for the country,” she said. Despite the mixed leadership composition, she maintained that the party’s political DNA \u2014 rooted in the careers and networks of its founders \u2014 would continue to register as Malay-centric until the party demonstrates otherwise through sustained conduct rather than structural optics.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya added a coalition-dynamics dimension, noting that PAS has been growing in both strength and confidence and is unlikely to cede narrative control to a junior partner the way it might have tolerated from Bersatu at an earlier stage. Wawasan, in his view, risks being absorbed into PN’s orbit as a complementary instrument rather than ascending to a leadership role within it. The party’s founders may have intended to offer something new to Malaysian politics, but the structural constraints of operating within an Islamist-anchored coalition, combined with a leadership profile that recalls the past more than it anticipates the future, make that ambition considerably harder to realise than the party’s own rhetoric suggests.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Wawasan enters Malaysian politics carrying a genuinely ambitious institutional brief \u2014 multiracial representation, centrist moderation, coalition bridge-building \u2014 but the gap between that brief and its current structural realities is wide.
