Singapore recorded 441 suicides in 2024, according to finalised data from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) released by the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) on Tuesday, 28 July. The headline figure represents a suicide death rate of 8.23 per 100,000 residents<\/strong> \u2014 an increase of 0.04 from the previous year. Across most age groups, numbers moved in a cautiously encouraging direction. One cohort, however, broke sharply from that trend: adults aged 30 to 39.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n There were 99 suicides<\/strong> in that age group in 2024, up 50 per cent from 66 the year before. That single statistic carries significant weight. Suicide was the second leading cause of death<\/strong> among this cohort, a ranking that places it alongside cardiovascular disease and cancer as a primary driver of premature mortality. SOS, drawing on observations from its 24-hour crisis helplines, identified the pressures bearing down on this group as complex and compounding \u2014 family strain, employment instability, and deepening social isolation converging at a life stage when many Singaporeans carry their heaviest structural obligations.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n The gap between provisional and finalised suicide figures deserves careful attention, because it is substantial and routinely misunderstood. SOS noted that 256 suicides have been recorded in 2025 on a provisional basis \u2014 but the 2024 data illustrates precisely how much revision occurs. The provisional figure published last year stood at 314 deaths<\/strong>; the finalised count reached 441<\/strong>, a difference of 127 cases.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam<\/strong> explained the mechanism in a written parliamentary reply last September. Provisional figures reflect only those cases confirmed as suicides at the time of publication. Cases of unnatural death still awaiting a coroner’s inquiry are excluded at that stage, and once those inquiries conclude, reclassified cases are incorporated into the following year’s publication. The implication is clear: any reading of Singapore’s suicide statistics that relies solely on provisional data will systematically undercount the true toll.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Of the 441 suicides recorded, 290 were men<\/strong> (65.8 per cent) and 151 were women<\/strong> (34.2 per cent). The disparity sharpens with age. Among residents aged 60 and above, men died by suicide at approximately three times the rate of women<\/strong> \u2014 a gap SOS attributes to the compounding effects of social isolation, reluctance to seek help when experiencing emotional distress, and a higher likelihood of using lethal means during attempts. For older men specifically, declining physical health and shrinking social networks form a particularly dangerous combination.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Women, meanwhile, accounted for 62.5 per cent<\/strong> of suicide-related calls and texts received by SOS despite representing only one-third of deaths. SOS interprets this as evidence of higher help-seeking behaviour among women, shaped by pressures tied to caregiving responsibilities and gender-based violence. The divergence between who dies and who calls is not a statistical anomaly \u2014 it reflects structurally different relationships with distress, disclosure, and institutional support across genders.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Suicide remained the leading cause of death among youths aged 10 to 29<\/strong> in 2024. SOS identified stressors related to family dynamics, academic performance, and interpersonal relationships as the primary drivers within this group. The persistence of suicide as the top cause of death in this cohort \u2014 year after year \u2014 signals something that cannot be addressed through crisis intervention alone. It points to structural conditions: an education system calibrated for high performance, a housing and labour market that delays independence, and social environments where vulnerability is still frequently penalised.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n SOS reported that it de-escalates and prevents one person at imminent risk of suicide every 13 hours<\/strong> through timely crisis intervention. Over the past year, the organisation responded to more than 55,000 calls and chats<\/strong> via its 24-hour hotline and CareText services. Its Be A Samaritan<\/em> programme trained more than 2,000 individuals<\/strong> across workplaces, schools, and communities in the past financial year to recognise early distress signals and initiate supportive conversations. In-person counselling and support groups reached more than 1,200 individuals<\/strong> experiencing emotional crisis.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n SOS CEO Terry Siow<\/strong> was direct about the limits of professional intervention: “Suicide prevention cannot rest solely with crisis services or mental health professionals. It requires all of us \u2014 as family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbours \u2014 to recognise when someone may be struggling and have the confidence to start a conversation and direct them to the appropriate support resources.” That framing places responsibility at the community level, not merely at the clinical one.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Dr Jared Ng<\/strong>, medical director, psychiatrist and senior consultant at Connections MindHealth, offered a sharper human register: “These should not just be numbers. Behind each one is a parent who still lies awake wondering what they missed, a friend who wishes they had called back.
