Leveraged ETFs amplify the structural problem they appear to solve. By using derivatives to replicate borrowed-money positions and promising a multiple of daily returns, they generate trading activity that far exceeds actual investor flows \u2014 purchases must be scaled up to mirror the leveraged exposure, creating the very rebalancing pressure that has rattled Samsung and SK Hynix shares. Over time, fees and compounding decay erode returns, leaving retail investors exposed to asymmetric downside without commensurate upside.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The FSC’s own credibility is now implicated. In June, the head of South Korea’s market watchdog offered a rare public admission that regulators had moved too hastily in approving these products \u2014 an acknowledgment that the current measures are as much about institutional repair as investor protection.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Whether the intervention restores confidence or simply displaces volatility into the implementation window remains the central question.
