At least 300 vehicles have been prosecuted since the rollout began, according to city police spokesman NM Nasiruddin.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>A City Where Walking Outpaces Driving<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>The stakes are significant. A study by the <strong>US National Bureau of Economic Research<\/strong> previously ranked Dhaka as the world&#8217;s slowest city. A joint report by the World Bank and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology found average traffic speeds of just <strong>4.8 kilometres per hour<\/strong> \u2014 slower than a brisk walk.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Buses, cars, motorcycles, and rickshaws compete for severely limited road space, creating conditions that have historically made manual enforcement both inefficient and confrontational.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Reducing Confrontation on the Ground<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those who violate the rules turn against us,&#8221; traffic sergeant SM Nazim Uddin told AFP. &#8220;But since AI was introduced, people behind the wheel have started obeying the law \u2014 and we have been spared the everyday quarrels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The shift in driver behaviour appears to be taking hold. Motorist Hannan Rahman Jibon, 28, said he was among the first caught by the new system after running a red light. The fine was sent directly to the vehicle owner&#8217;s phone while the owner was at home.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am more careful now, with cameras installed in many different parts,&#8221; Jibon said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Phased Expansion Planned<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Officials have indicated that <strong>manual enforcement will be progressively phased out<\/strong> as AI camera coverage expands across the city.
